San Andreas Fault Jeep Eco-Tour

This awe-inspiring journey in our classic Big Red Jeeps takes you deep into the heart of the San Andreas Fault. Witness the tremendous forces of nature that have created amazing steep walled canyons and some of the most twisted and tormented landscapes on earth. 

On your adventure you will:

  • Explore a lush natural palm oasis where you will see water seeping up through the underground aquifer as your expert naturalist guide describes how the Cahuilla Indians used the desert's plants for food, medicine, and shelter.

  • Learn about the life and culture of the Cahuilla Indians lived as you explore our replica Cahuilla Village situated on a historic Indian site.  

  • Experience the awesome power of nature as you explore narrow slot canyons created by the collision of the Pacific and North American plates. 

  • Explore our Old Mining Camp which is filled with antique mining equipment and displays.  You will also tour our enhanced gold mine exhibit and have the opportunity to pan for gold.

This is our most popular tour and includes plenty of time for exploration.  This tour can also be customized according to your particular interests and abilities and can include a moderate to challenging hike, if desired.

Faultline Jeep Eco-Tour
(1.5 to 2 Hours)

 

 

 

The Faultline Jeep Eco-Tour is a shorter version of our popular 3-Hour San Andreas Fault Jeep Eco-Tour that includes the major highlights of the longer tour, but features less walking and less getting in and out of the Jeep.  Thus, this tour may be more suitable for guests with limited mobility or families with younger children or for guests with limited time to explore, but who still want to experience the San Andreas Fault.

Painted Canyon (Mecca Hills) Jeep Eco-Tour
(4 hours)

TOUR ADVISORIES:

  • This tour involves walking or hiking through soft sand. Proper footwear and good physical conditioning is required.
  • There are no restroom facilities on this tour.

This adventure begins with a 40-minute journey through the lush agricultural lands at the Eastern end of the Coachella Valley.  Discover why this part of the valley is called the “Salad Bowl” as your guide explains the importance of agriculture to the economy of the Palm Springs area.  As we work our way East, you will enjoy incredible views of the Salton Sea, the second largest inland body of water in the United States, where over 400 species of migratory birds rest and nest on their migratory path along the pacific flyway. Then we are on to the awe-inspiring Mystery Canyon. Thrust up by tectonic collisions and cut into endless mazes by erosion, these steep-walled canyons offer some of the most spectacular scenery, tortured rock formations, and amazing colors seen in the desert.

Departure Locations:

Jeep Tours depart from the Metate Ranch Parking Lot at the North end of Monroe Street in Indio, CA.  Click here for directions. Hotel pickup is available from select hotels for some tours.

Rent-a-Guide Tours depart from your hotel or a location of your choosing.

 

 

Private Tours:

Private tours (sold by the Jeep rather than by the seat) are also available. 

Private tours have flexible departure times and may include hotel pickup.

Minimum Age for Children:

The recommended minimum age for children on the San Andreas Fault Jeep Tour is 5 years. 

The recommended minimum age for children on the Painted Hills Jeep Tours is 8 years. 

Families with younger children are encouraged to book a private tour. 

 

 

Vehicles:

Desert Adventures operates a fleet of fifteen (15) open-air Jeep Scramblers.  Each Jeep holds seven (7) guests plus a naturalist guide/driver.

 

 

Group Tours:

We can accommodate groups of up to 100 passengers at a time.  Larger groups can be accommodated using multiple rounds or pairing Jeep tours with other activities.   Catering is available with group tours.
