FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
TOUR GUIDES
We will be accepting applications for guide candidates for the 2012 / 13 season beginning June 1, 2012. However, realistically, you will not have an opportunity to begin work until the end of the year. So if you need an immediate source of income, this is not the position for you.
Here's what happens after you submit your application:
-
First, your application will be reviewed by our President and our Training Coordinator.
-
After your application has been reviewed, you may be contacted in mid-September to arrange an interview. We are looking for candidates with a strong passion and love for the desert and a desire to share that passion with others. It's great if you know about the rocks, plants, animals, history, etc. of the desert, but what's more important is your willness and ability to learn (we will provide you will all the information you need to become a good guide). We also look for candiates with a great personality as part of your job is to entertain as well as educate.
-
Based on the outcome of your interview and reference check, you may then be invited to go on a "ride-along" so you can experience first-hand what our tours are like and so you can decide if this is something you want (and are able) to do.
-
Following the interview and ride-along, a handful of successful applicants will be invited to participate in our training program which begins at the end of September / beginning of Octobers. Our goal is to have new guides certified by the end of the year so that they are ready to go when we hit our peak season (which begins Christmas week and goes through mid-May).
Here's some other information you should know up front:
-
Desert Adventures is required to participate in mandatory random drug and alcohol testing as part of our requirements for operating under license with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Prior to driving your first tour, you will be required to submit to a drug test at your own expense. Failure to pass your drug screening will result in Desert Adventures rescinding the employment offer or terminating your employment. Currently drug tests run about $60.00. You must use our authorized testing service for your pre-employment drug test. After you are employed, you will be required to participate in periodic, random drug and/or alcohol testing (which is paid for by Desert Adventures).
-
You will be required to become CPR and First Aid certified prior to driving your first tour, at your own expense, and you must maintain your certification at all times while you are employed by Desert Adventures. Currently the cost for a 2-year CPR / 1st Aid Certification is $50 if you use our authorized trainer. After you are hired, Desert Adventures will pay for your recertification every 2 years as long as you are in good standing and you attend the annual recertification class that we schedule in September / early October of each year.
-
All candidates must complete an intensive and extensive training program. This training is UNPAID and takes most people about 2.5 to 3 months to complete. Classes are typically held 3 days per week (usually in the mornings from 8 AM to Noon) and you are expected to attend all trainnig sessions. Some classes are conducted in the classroom and some out in the field. In addition, you will need to commit to independent study and outside reading. You must be able to committ to training if you want to be considered.
-
All of our guide positions are part-time and on-call. The amount of work you will receive will fluctuate throughout the year according to business demands. We are unable to guarantee a certain number of hours/tours per week or a set schedule. You must have good availability and flexibility to work when we have tours to offer to you. You should not rely on this job to support yourself nor should you think of this as just a "weekend job". We need you to be available to work when we have tours, but we don't always know in advance when that will be. We will try to give you as much advance notice as possible, but often time tours are booked at the last minute. So your ability to accept last-minute work will increase the amount of work you get. Quite honestly, this position is best suited for individuals who are looking for something fun to do and who only need to make a little “pocket money”. This is not the position for you if you need to support yourself on your tour income.
-
A current DMV printout of your driving record must accompany your completed application. All offers of employment are contingent upon our insurance company approving your driving qualifications.
-

-
