Desert Adventures now offers a variety of interactive activities that can offered on property for your guests’ and groups’ enjoyment.
The following activities can be tailored for children and family programs as well as spouse programs and corporate events.
Gaze at the clear desert skies through the lens of a high-powered telescope as your star navigator points out planets, stars, and constellations and shares fun astronomical facts, trivia, history, and mythology of many popular celestial objects. You will also be amazed by our “Sky Scout” which uses advanced GPS technology to identify thousands of stars, planets, constellations and more. Simply point the Sky Scout at any star in the sky and click the target button. The Sky Scout will tell you what celestial object you are looking at or you can locate a star or planet by following directional arrows through the viewfinder. It’s amazing!
Includes gold panning instruction & storytelling, gold panning trough stocked with iron pyrite (fools gold), panning supplies, set-up, tear-down, and vials for guests to take home the “gold” they find as a keepsake souvenir.
Using a laser pointer, our star navigator will point out asterisms (groupings of stars) and share fascinating stories about the celestial objects. This is a great fireside activity!
Gather ‘round and hear the tales of Black Bart, Willie Boy, and other cowboys, outlaws, pioneers, and miners who called the desert home!
Gather 'round and learn about the history, culture, and ceremonies of the Cahuilla Indians. According to Cahuilla beliefs, the world began with the creation of twin brothers, Mukat and Temeyawet. Through the power of the Creator, these twin brothers made and named all things. Learn more about their fascinating creation story as well as other beliefs, myths, and ceremonies of the Cahuilla in this informative and entertaining storytelling session.
Enjoy colorful commentary about California’s wild beginnings and relive the Stone Age Era through this fascinating tool and weapon making demonstration. Presentation includes: bows and arrows, tools and their uses, shaping and construction techniques, throwing sticks and how they were used, and more.
In this interactive program your guests will learn about some of the techniques and materials Native American tribes use to make their amazing baskets. Our basket maker will begin with a "starter basket" and then will teach your guests techniques for adding stitches and coils to a "People Basket". Guests who wish to participate are invited to add a stitch or two, or even an entire coil. Everyone who participates will have their name added to the “People Basket" and at the end of the night the basket will be raffled off.

This interactive package includes Pioneer Storytelling and gold panning plus “Pioneer Show and Tell” featuring a variety of historical artifacts from the late 1800’s that were used by gold miners and early settlers.

In traditional Cahuilla culture, children were named by the Net (similar to a “chief”) when they reached 4 or 5 years of age. The names they were given often reflected something of their personality, strengths, or skills. In this interactive program, children will learn the about the Cahuilla Naming Ceremony and then will participate in their own Naming Ceremony where they will receive their own special Cahuilla Name.

In this program, younger children can learn about the desert they color pictures of some of the desert’s plants and animals and make sand paintings while a naturalist guide tells fun stories about the desert. Recommended for children aged 3 to 8 years old.
In this interactive program, children will learn how to make an arrow using natural materials found in our desert or an arrowhead necklace by braiding palm fibers and attaching an Indian arrowhead. Price includes instruction plus the supplies for children to make their own arrow or arrowhead necklace. Recommended for children aged 6 and up.
In this engaging program, a naturalist guide will teach the children about Indian Rock Art (petroglyphs) including a general discussion of how people told stories and passed along information through their petroglyphs. They will also discuss the kinds of rock art characteristic of the Cahuilla People that has been found in our valley and what experts “think” the various shapes and symbols mean. Then the children will have the opportunity to create their own petroglyph to take home and will be given the opportunity to share with the group the meaning in their artwork. Price includes guided instruction and supplies. Recommended for children aged 8 and up.
